Hi
I’m Cocoa Bean.
You may not have thought about me and my tribe much before - and that’s okay. I don’t want or need to be famous.
But today is World Chocolate Day and, quite frankly, I feel I’ve earned a moment in the spotlight.
Why? Because before I became your favourite chocolate bar, truffle or brownie, I went on a journey.
I was plucked from a pod in the sticky heat of a tropical farm in Ecuador.
I dried under the sun, together with millions of my tribe.
I faced customs inspections.
I was loaded into a monstrously huge ship.
I crossed oceans.
I was scooped out of the ship in Amsterdam and conveyor belted into a nice, clean pen.
And through it all, I was kept in prime condition, thanks to some behind-the-scenes logistics legends.
On arrival in Amsterdam, my Dutch friends at Commodity Centre made sure I was carefully handled and stored. They made sure I didn’t get too damp, too jostled or too lonely. They tracked me, piled me up and protected me like I was gold. Because to chocolate lovers, I am.
So, when you unwrap that silky chocolate bar or look at your perfect chocolate brownie today, spare a thought for me and my tribe of humble cocoa beans all over the world.
